Workshop : “Urban Spaces: Cultural Dynamics in the Metropolis”

This workshop aims to bring together scholars working in the area of urban studies in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Our aim is to create lasting links between the recent Brookes research cluster in urban studies and other urban research groups in Europe. The workshop will take place on the 12th June 2008, at Oxford Brookes University. It is expected to feed into international collaboration with several partners, as it is part of a broader strategy aiming toward the creation of an international research network across the disciplines. In the framework of the workshop, participants will meet, present briefly their recent research, find common interests and discuss the modalities of a larger international collaboration. Subsequent to the workshop, a co-ordinated strategy will be designed, determining the role and degree of involvement of each partner for the forthcoming years. As a short-term outcome of the workshop, we will be able to submit International Networks grant applications (COST, ESF, AHRC), to secure financial support for further common projects. One condition of application for network grants is a number of contacts with institutions in different European countries, while another is a strong element of participation of young researchers. The aim of this workshop is precisely to create links which will allow us to fulfill these conditions. Successful grant applications would enable travel to and from Europe by members of the network and their European colleagues to cement the international links developed and to hold planning meetings to draft collaborative research plans. The overarching aim of the initiative is to promote progressive urban research across disciplines in the urban arena.

Cet atelier-journée d’étude vise à rassembler des chercheurs qui travaillent dans le domaine des études urbaines en arts et sciences humaines. Notre objectif est de créer des liens durables entre les chercheurs de l’université Oxford Brookes et d’autres chercheurs et groupes de recherche à travers l’Europe. L’atelier aura lieu le 12 juin 2008 à l’université Oxford Brookes. Nous espérons qu’il donnera lieu à une collaboration rassemblant plusieurs partenaires européens et mènera à la création d’un réseau de recherche international et interdisciplinaire. Dans le cadre de l’atelier, les participants auront l’occasion de discuter, de présenter brièvement leurs recherches, de découvrir des intérêts communs et de déterminer les modalités d’une collaboration future. Un de nos premiers objectifs consiste à élaborer une stratégie commune visant à obtenir des subventions permettant le développement et la promotion du réseau. Une condition essentielle de la candidature à diverses subventions nationales et européennes (COST, ESF, AHRC) est le contact déjà établi avec un certain nombre d’établissements européens et la participation substantielle de jeunes chercheurs. Le financement obtenu permettrait aux membres du réseau d’effectuer des voyages et de forger de projets en partenariat. Ces collaborations contribueront à l’échange du savoir et à la promotion de la recherche en études urbaines à travers les disciplines et sur le plan international.
